Joe Mazzulla Named Permanent Head Coach of the Boston Celtics

Former Interim Head Coach Earns Full-Time Role

Boston, MA —

The Boston Celtics have officially announced the appointment of Joe Mazzulla as the team's permanent head coach. Mazzulla, who has served as the Celtics' interim head coach since September 2022, has led the team to a 42-17 record, the best mark in the Eastern Conference.

The decision to name Mazzulla the permanent head coach came after a thorough search process that included interviews with several candidates. However, the Celtics front office was impressed by Mazzulla's leadership, his ability to connect with the players, and his track record of success.

"Joe has earned this opportunity," said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens. "He has shown that he is a great coach and a great leader. We are confident that he will continue to help this team reach its full potential."

Mazzulla, 34, is a former NBA player who played for the Celtics from 2010 to 2012. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Celtics' G League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws, in 2016. He was promoted to assistant coach of the Celtics in 2019.

"I am honored and grateful for this opportunity," Mazzulla said. "I love this team and this city. We have a special group of players and a great future ahead of us. I can't wait to get to work."

The Celtics will open the 2023-24 season at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 18th.
